So, now that I've got a Frysky X9D on the way, the question comes up: How do we get Devo support on a non Walkera Tx?
I have my old non-telemetry Devo module, so I will likely use that for myself, but that isn't exactly a suitable solution for others. My understanding is that Walkera no longer sells the telemetry module, and I've never seen modules for sail like the cc2500, a7105, or nrf modules on ebay.

One possibility I was thinking of is programming a Rx to work as a Tx if we could find one with a PA.
I checked my:
DSMX AR6210: No Pa (unsurprising)
DSMX TM1100: No obvious PA (kind of surprising)
Walkera 2602: No PA (unsurprising)
Devo RX1202: Same PA as Devo Tx board

The RX1202 has an Atmel processor, so we could probably write a custom firmware to convert it to a Tx module (or maybe even bypass the Atmel altogether). But now I am trying to recall whether the 1202 has any telemetry feedback. If not, the board may be wired for Rx only. I'll spend some more time looking at it to see how the PA is wired (like the 7e) or it may not have a multiplexer on the data line.

The RX1202 is pretty pricey to hack up this way though. An RX601 would be the cheapest Devo compatible Rx I've seen, but I don't know if the circuitry is similar. Does anyone have one?

A magic cube would be another option to investigate, though converting one to an internal module seems kinda wasteful.

An orange TX module would be another option to look into.

Are there any other ideas where to get a compatible module?

They still have some when I made my order, 27 Oct 2013. And showing stock.

Not sure if any good... but free shipping orders over $450 :woohoo:

I can confirm, I've just ordered one from ehirobo:
www.ehirobo.com/shop/p11530/WALKERA-(WK-...le/product_info.html

Hobbyone has them too:
www.hobbyone.com.hk/cn/product.jsp?id=10896

About the other options:
- no standard receivers do telemetry, so probably the PA only wired as a preamp;
- the telemetry module should have it, but it is expensive;
- the magic cube doesn't have a PA...

If you just search for WK-DEVO-S-MOD, you'll find there are places with "discount" price of $9.99, e.g. www.hobby-usa.com/newsletter/120201.html

I never bought from them so I can't vouch, but the price is reasonable, and it should have PA.

Regarding the CC2500 module on Taranis - as I mentioned in another thread, it is probably intelligent module with protocol implementation embedded in it. I have not seen FrSky protocol code in their codebase, and there are two crystals on the RF board - one for CC2500, one for the MCU on board. So we need a source for reasonable CC2500 modules as well :-(

It's an old one, and it is from the same seller ehirobo, which has a few different names...

Stupid question, Can be installed in the devo7E to avoid to do the diode mod ?

So has the idea of getting frsky protocol to work on a devo tx kind of gone out the window? I love my devo 12...

The idea did not, but the practical issues are complicated. My hypothesis that in some of CC2500 modules PA/LNA has peculiar requirements for RXEN/TXEN is still just a hypothesis, it needs confirmation. I don't have any FrSky-2 receivers (BTW, what's the cheapest one which I could use for this?), so I can't check it. PhracturedBlue (who handled these protocols in the first place) seems to be busy, we should be grateful he can devote as much time to the project as possible now for him.

So, my prediction - don't expect it this year.

Also, I would like to ask about physical dimensions of your Devo12 - is it like Devo10? Do you have photo of insides?

The devo12 is quite a bit larger than the devo10. Here's a pic of the Walkera Tx I had at the time (I've since collected a F7):

It is really a nice Tx though. There are several pics of the inside here:

As victzh said, the protocol work for Frsky is done. the problem is it doesn't work, and I haven't been able to figure out why.

Frsky Rx run ~$20 from China:
www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__402_...Ghz_FrSky_ACCST.html

I have an old-protocol V8R and a new protocol D6FR that I used for protocol analysis. Also one of the DHT DIY kits for the Tx. I think I tried running just the PA without the LNA when I was wokring on it, but I can't remember for sure.

My question is...why can't the FrSky guys just solder in the DIY FrSky module. Like how one would do it on the Turnigy 9x?

Just tap into the PPM line.

An intermediate solution until native FrSky is supported by Deviation.

p.s. The Devo 12 screen size makes it look like a "modern" radio. :)

Sure it would be great to have basic Frsky working. Still you'd be push to better DIY/module + bluetooth + MultiWii EZ-gui Frsky option very nice. Unless your thinking adding bluetooth + Google maps :silly:

Ps for Devo7e LOL

The devo12 runs off of a 1s battery and the diy needs 6v. So you need to add a 2s battery as well.

More importantly, I'm hoping that all I'll need to add is a proper small module and we'll get telemetry just like we get with the devo RX's but without having to buy the ~$50 telemetry unit. Nice all in one, clean, solution.

Hey, if it never happens, that's ok... as time goes by I'm slowing buying more Devo RX's and telemetry modules anyway.

From Hammer22@RCG

Try the Artaflex AWP24S available at Digikey. It's based on the CYRF7936 chip but has the exact same register set as the CYRF6936. Anything written for the 6936 should work fine on it but it costs a little more more than the Leto-M.

Artaflex module at digikey 25$

There is also the Unigen Leto module.

Some info about those two modules

Could not find the Leto anywhere btw.

Question is, if that is hardwired for use as a preamp only...

ATmega86
CYRF6936
RDAT212 used as LNA only. FDR, you right.

Yeah, that is the right module, but usually it is out of stock everywhere, at least where it is under $20.
I've got one spare waiting for the universal module... ;)
