VM dedicated to compiling Deviation

Here is the public version of the virtual machine running linux, dedicated to compiling and building Deviation firmware.

Need 2-3 testers for a VM I've done specifically dedicated to compiling Deviation.

Details:
- the VM is running inside VirtualBox.
- running minimal ArchLinux.
- all tools installed.
- I've written a perl script to ease the process of cloning, updating and compiling.
- easy access to DFU files through a VirtualBox shared folder.

I got it running, I just need 2 or 3 people to tell me if my instructions are clear and iron out bugs. Docs are 95% done.

Once I have 2 people I will send out instructions. I expect to do this tomorrow since it's already 8PM here.

Ok, let me be your second. But I can not promise to do the testing tomorrow because here we celebrate Christmas Evening at Dec 24th.
Do you now if your VM will run with VMware player? Otherwise I will install VirtualBox. Is 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' needed too (for USB-Upload of filesystem)?

I'm not in hurry with testing, this is xmas time after all.

I will send out instructions tomorrow, I'm doing last preps on the VM.

I don't know if it will run on Vmware Player, I haven't checked. It will be exported as an OVA file though.

VMware Player can import *.ova-files (Open Virtual Machine Format Images), but I will give the VitualBox a chance too... looks ok on first sight.

No need for special setups for native Windows users as my setup only involves running one command. Everything else is already pre-configured.

Informations about download have been sent out. Will update the first post with how-to docs soon. VM is around ~700MB in size.

My 2 cents:

A way to change the keymap (it is a little bit tricky by vi)

A way to change the repo that it will connect to (to use my own)

But the rest looks fine at the moment. Will try futher tomorrow

Both answer to yes, but not atm. Keymap should be straightforward, default is US, change it in /etc/vconsole.conf, modify the line:

KEYMAP=us

with your own. You can find a list of preconfigured keymaps in:
/usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty

Replace qwerty with qwertz or azerty/azertz if needed. Just look for your own then modify the KEYMAP line.

I will probably not include a way to change it automatically as it is easy enough to do by yourself and not many will need it.

Second I will definitely include a way to choose the repo because I have my own as well and I mostly want to compile from my own as I have patches and modifications in.

Tried to run the VM today but it seems as if my CPU has no VT-x and so the os dies while loading the ramdisk (also in VMware Player where I run my other VMs...).
I will try to find a suitable hardware tomorrow (my pc should do...).

What CPU do you have? Check BIOS/EFI settings most brand name PCs come with VT-X/SVM disabled by default, dunno why. Even an older Intel Core 2 Duo/i3 or AMD Athlon 64 should work.

AFAIK the only 'must have' requirement is a 64bit CPU.

(Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz)
Running on windows7 32bit

My VM runs Linux 64bit, so it won't run on 32bit machines.
That is a sort of a overlook on my part. It'll probably be better if I rebuild it on 32bit. That will take me a day or so, so stay tuned.

I've finished building a 32bit machine. Gonna test for a bit, upload and send you guys a new download link.

I have an Acer Notebook with Intel P7450. It is 64bit capable (running with Windows 7 64bit), but no 64bit VMs (same for VMPlayer) because VT-x is needed.
A 64bit-linux seems to be a bit of overkill but it is today's state of the art.
Tomorrow I will look for other hardware and / or try on my PC, but I have to do this with linux because I have only a 32bit-XP... Maybe a good time for an upgrade to Win8?

the 32bit-vm works fine. I just tested the functionality and your script does exactly what it should. Great work!

I do some more testing tomorrow. Maybe I have one or two ideas for improvement...
