This may be a silly question, but, if wanting to add only a 2 position switch, are the diodes still needed? I do not know much about diodes or what sizes to get and would prefer to just solder the switch on if it is not needed for a 2 position.

Perhaps you can try it without diodes and tell us if it work.
The diodes is 1N4001 said in the first page with pictures of wiring but any diodes should work.

yes the diode is needed regardless.
I made a previous statement that they aren't but I was wrong.

ok thank you! Guess I will be learning how to solder diodes today.
Just out of curiosity, what is it needed? Isn't the switch just completing a circuit?

Quote from the first page: "Solder a diode to the top contact of both switches. Pay attention to the direction of the diodes. Different doide types have different appearance. The one I am using is a low voltage rectifier 1N4001 but whatever diode type should also works. The point is to make sure current is flowing from the Yelow/Orange to the Red wire."

In the switch mod what you are doing is making adding a switch that looks like a button. To save wiring, the buttons are actually wired together in a grid (much like your keyboard) to allow a few wires to detect many more buttons. The downside of this, is that there are many cases where holding multiple buttons simultaneously can't be detected. Since we're treating a switch like a button, it is as if we are holding it down forever. This would prevent other buttons from being detected if the diode wasn't there.
The diode only allows current to flow in one direction. This allows us to read the buttons in one direction and the switches in the opposite direction. Basically it means activating a switch doesn't affect our ability to read the buttons.

Hi everyone.
First post please be gentle.
I have just flashed my devo 7e to deviation 4.0.1 and am looking add an extra switch.
All i'm am after is one extra switch for fmode (3 way) ie. have normal mode, ST-1 and ST-2 (e.g. using Tom Zadars Mini CP settings).
Is kaworu method below the best way to wire up the switch?
Are only 2 diodes needed? (my electrical know how is minimal).
www.deviationtx.com/forum/how-to/1436-ad...vo-7e?start=40#11635
Lastly, how do i patch the firmware?? Are there some beginner guides?
Cheers

Yes you can follow those instructions. Note that if you ever want a 2nd switch you will need to rewire the 1st one since the "two 3-way switch" mod is different than the "one 3-way switch" mod. These days the best option is to use a nightly build. Then you do not need to patch the firmware at all, and can instead just edit the hardware.ini file.

Thanks PhracturedBlue for the explanation. Will stick with 1x 3 way switch.
Much appreciated...

Ok, I got the firmware working so I have the option to add the switch but when I add SWA and SWB they are not working. I will recheck my hardware connections.

Ok I am stumped. I did the hardware mod, double checked it and looks good. Installed newest nightly build of deviation and did the DFU update. Tested the switches and I see them in the firmware but they do not actually work.
Here's some pics of my hardware mod. Please let me know if you see anything wrong.

ripped it apart quick and changed it... works now! no better feeling than having something go wrong and then figuring it out and fixing it!

Now that I have the extra switches. How do I add a "Idle up 2" to use with the switches?

change your fmode switch to swa or swb and the extra fmode will be available

Figured it out, I was trying to use the Simple GUI to do it. I don't believe the Simple GUI allows for it. With the advanced GUI it was simple, just had to read how to use it.
this is a little off topic but what is Channel 5 used for? 1-4 is stick inputs, 6 is pitch, i'm confused as to what 5 is.

the standard GUI also allows it, go into the 'switch assignment' menu, then change 'fly mode' to SW A or SW B (depending on which switch you want to use as your fmode switch) then press the 'ent' key to confirm the change.
ch5 is usually for gear or gyro gain

Where did you read. I can't find a documentation. Tried a few searches, but without success. Maybe someone can give me hint, where to look, please.

Yes it allows you to change it for one of the inputs, however, it does not allow me to make a completely second switch for that channel. So I can't run 80% throttle on SWa and 100% throttle on FMODE.
With advanced GUI i can.
You can find the instructions under "User Manual" on the left side of this screen. I recommend reading the entire thing. Very well written and informative!
Thank you PB!
