Forum upgrade ???

The only thing that really bothers me is the space the Main Menu takes up on the left hand side of the screen. It takes up 1/3 of the width leaving the forum itself in what remains.
I know it's always been like that, but it's a terrible use of the screen's real estate.
If the menu wasn't shown on the left after you click the 'Forum' link, the new style would work much better and it would be possible to see more of the thread's posts on one screen. What with most computers using widescreen displays these days, anything that can get more information in vertically would be really appreciated!

As per everyone else, "too much white" is the first point.FDR wrote: If you want to help the styling process, please list your concrete complaints against this style, and the positives too!
Getting into some quick tweaks;
- buttons have too much vertical space, change .btn style to have line-height: 10px (currently 20px)
- "FDR replied the topic..."; either get rid of it (kinda pointless), or greatly reduce size and space. Merge inline with post time if possible
- .alert, change margin-bottom: 5px (currently 20px), add line-height and font-size tags to greatly reduce the space taken
Also in general there seems to be a lot of space used up the top before getting to the actual posts, can't remember how it was before but I don't think it was anywhere near that much. Though the above alert and btn style changes could make a slight positive impact on that.

This is a bit OOT as this as nothing to do with the design, but as you're working on the forum, maybe this can be useful.
Since a few months:
- I never receive email notifications for private messages
- Sometimes (~20% ?) I don't receive thread reply notifications either
- Seems my status is always offline, even if I click "+ Online" in the drop down menu
Please allow more than 4 (or 6 ? I can't remember) urls per post, it is pretty limiting since even /img tags count as an url.
And last thing, is it possible to use avatars ? (gravatar if space on the server is an issue).
I think it adds a lot to readability when browsing a thread.

Actually, text becomes very hard to read if its too wide. What size screen are you on? On my 11" macbook air I use 125% zoom setting (which makes the forum text narrower) on this site for improved readability. The menu then occupies about 1/4 of the screen width.
Also, what RoGuE_StreaK said.

www.rc-network.de forum also has that feature.
You can recover a lost input message by blicking on a text box below saying "recover automatically saved text" once you loose the input text, change window url (e.g back), close the browser, loose server connection, etc.

Not really. A little shocking, perhaps. Why does it start off in red font? Yikes.
It's certainly different.
Upgrades aren't usually quite this radical.
Which software package is this?
Thanks for your efforts at keeping things running, btw.

Everything was in red when I started entering the post. All changed to black when I forced one line to black. Odd behavior.

In the meantime I condensed the layout a bit, especially the topic lists.
I know it's a slow advance, but I don't have too much time...

Just added Lazarus to my Firefox ... knew those tools were out there, keep forgetting to look.
Thanks.
(The Write/Preview tabs do seem like a minor improvement ...)

I swear I'm online right now
Oh well, not a big deal, and I see FDR already made some good work
The only thing that really annoys me is that I don't receive email notifications for PM, but this has been like that for months, well before the upgrade.

PB switched off the PM email notifications long time ago, when somebody cracked the site and used it to send out spams.goebish wrote: The only thing that really annoys me is that I don't receive email notifications for PM, but this has been like that for months, well before the upgrade.
There are some vulnerabilities in the PM component, which is unsafe to use...
However the email notifications about new forum posts should work.
I will not stop here, but the progress is rather slow.goebish wrote: Oh well, not a big deal, and I see FDR already made some good work
I'm almost finished with the recent topics list, but there is still a lot of things need to be done on the posts listing and editing...
I will alter the color scheme after that...
I don't know yet how to get rid of the "XX replied the topic: ..." thing, because that isn't separately stored in the HTML, but in one attribute value...
BTW does somebody have screenshots of the old forum? It would be handy...

Ok for PM notification, I had missed the information.
