Impact on model battery life ? was created by ethernode
Hello,

I used to use Horizon Hobby's stock transmitter ( MLP4DSM -- reportedly 10 mw) with an Inductrix ; i used to have 5-6 minutes flight times consistently; i then got a Devo 7E to use with Deviation, and created a ini based off Daryoon's Nano QX model10.ini (indoor ini) config. Using this radio, i now have a little 2:30 minutes of flight times (consistently).

How could anything in the config file have an impact on flight times ? tx_power ?

If you go back to the stock TX do you get your old flight times back?

For one thing, telemetry may make an impact; does it actually have telemetry, and if so was it used on the stock TX?

Yes, i just tested that. I will confirm with more test flights but i was getting 2:30 most cases, and i just had 4 minutes right now with the stock TX.

The stock tx may or may not use telemetry internally, there's no way to know (no display).

Is telemetry an "active" task (i.e. remote sends requests, model processes and sends responses back) or is that something supposed to be alway-on by the model, and remote just decodes it ?

I will try to disable telemetry and test again tonight.

That reduction in flight time matches what I see on both the Walkera Mini CP and the Estes Proto X if I turn on telemetry. Before you turn off telemetry, you might check the telemetry monitor page to see if anything is showing up.

Do not ask me questions via PM. Ask in the forums, where I'll answer if I can.

Wow, telemetry eats up so much juice ? I would have thought motors were the main culprit !

The data i see on the telemetry pages is bogus (negative temperature, strange rpm numbers) i didn't find anything useful at first sight; note that i based this ini off daryoon's template, and he enabled telemetry... Would that be debug only (e.g. see lost frames stats for instance) ?

I'll try tonight, thanks for the suggestion

Without motors, your run time goes from minutes to hours. At least that's what I'm seeing on my yachts.

Blade had used telemetry for "other" things before, so they may be doing that here. But that you're getting anything means it's connecting and transmitting.

I just tested, and yes, disabling telemetry seems to make much longer battery life ! Not enough tests to verify that it compares 1:1 with the stock transmitter, but that helps a lot, i can tell. I'll report if i have other findings.

[EDIT] more tests infirm what i initially thought; running more tests, to see if agility mode may have an impact. Will do the same with the stock remote. However, i am unsure how to test in comparable conditions (flight agressiveness), currently trying "quiet" flights and getting only 3 minutes instead of 5

I'll report when i have more data

Hello again,

I did more tests, nothing very conclusive. I used fresh batteries and things are much better, i still have to find a way to compare for real between the stock and deviation remotes. Sorry for the noise.
