Hi all. Is there any tutorial for installing the above model on to Devo 7e. I have to take the original because it is constantly failing me during flying my model aeroplane. The range is very good, but it switches itself on and off during the flight, and I can not trust this TX anymore and neigther I can find the reason why.
I have this module but puzzeled about its connecting pins under the board. How do I connect those pins to the TX points ? Very confused. Thanks for your help.

I know, I have seen it. But it is not clear to me. It is all confusing. All the connections are behind the wires. No where it is mentioned what type of Antenna it needs. What I would like know is after soldering all the wires at the back of Module, the module would be atleast about 12 mm proud. Would I be able to close the cover.
I request people who have done it, could they please share the knowledge here.

Don’t use the first photo as a guide, use the next two down. There’s a photo of the new module with the contacts colored and numbered, then the next photo shows the original 7E contacts with colored circles. Just match the colors in the two photos. Run a wire from the yellow contact in one picture to the yellow contact in the second picture. Do the same for each color.

Instructions on the site state:
“Remove the original cryf6936 module. Then you can use doublesided tape to install the WK-DE-VO-S-MOD module according to the color dots”

Based on the instructions and the first photo, it appears that there’s enough room for the module even with wires folded across the top, so fit should not be an issue. You mentioned soldering wires to the back of the module. I wouldn’t do that. Solder to the front (top) of the module for better clearance with the TX main board. That’s how it was done in the photo. The wires are attached to the top of the board. They don’t’ come from underneath.

There’s a couple of options for antennas. You can either use an internal antenna or an external antenna. An internal antenna is the easiest. You just plug it onto the module and run it into the antenna stub like the original antenna, or it can be folded horizontally at the top of the case. Here’s an example from Banggood.

The antenna wires come in different lengths, so pick your length depending on how you want to route the antenna.

The other antenna option is to use a pigtail and removable external antenna as pictured on the site mentioned. Banggood has the parts for that mod as well. You will need to cut the plastic antenna stub and glue the connector in.

I tried to change multimod = A13 to A14 no affect. The hardware ini file constantly get corrupted.
I always install the latest Nightly, format DEVO and paste the rest of the files. I do not get any stars on Protocol but when ever I tried to bind the receiver with DSM2 protocol I get the following :
Protocol Mismatch 0801ef44 0801ef60 and does not bind.
As I suspected this Module wont fit the case, hopefully when it is working, i entend to chop of the legs and solder the wires directly on top.
Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks

You are probably having problems with module fit since you soldered the wires to the bottom of the module instead of the top. Soldering to the bottom increases the space between the module and the main TX board.

Since you are simply replacing the CRYF module, you should not have to change anything in the hardware.ini file to have it work. However, uncommenting has_pa-cryf6936=1 will give better range. I see that you have enable-multimod=A13 uncommented. That line should not be enabled unless you have a multimode module installed.

I wish I had read your letter before I did it. Anyway after modifying Hardware Ini as you suggested, I got the same message of Protocol Mishmatch. This was on the latest nighty. After installing Ver: 5 I am getting Missing Module cyrf6936. Here is an Error Log :

You should not get the missing modules message if the module is installed correctly, and all the other modules are turned off in hardware.ini. Try the following settings. If you still get the missing module error then check your wiring and soldering. Soldering that I can see on the module looks good, but I can't see the pads on the TX board. Make sure things are connected correctly and that there's no shorts.

VDD is 3.3V not 5V. To find another connection point you can follow the trace of the missing pad and look for a place big enough to solder to. I don't know of an alternate connection point off hand.

Can not trace at the back because of the LCD and the LCD is fixed. However There is a point indicated in the photo attached. Can this point be used ?

Don't forget that this bit alone is NOT an antenna, it is only an EXTENSION; if you power up with only that connected, and no external antenna, you may well fry your new module!
If you are using the WK-DEVO-S-MOD module, you are better off using an external dipole antenna with some gain, eg. 2dbi or 3dbi, not an internal monopole which is basically what the 7E and 6S use; with a dipole that you can suitably bend you should see a fair bit of range gain over a monopole, maybe twice the range?

At the moment I am using 10cm PCI U.FL / IPX to RP-SMA Female Jack Pigtail Cable with Dual Band 2.4/5.8Ghz 6dBi RP-SMA Directional Wireless Wifi Antenna. (see Photo). Should I go for 2.4G RP-SMA Female To U.FL IPX 1.13 Pigtail Cable 20cm in combination with Dual Band 2.4/5.8Ghz 6dBi RP-SMA Directional Wireless Wifi Antenna.

It comes down to need and preference. I use an internal antenna like the one below, but then I don’t care much about range since I’m only flying small toy quads with my Devo. Even with the internal antenna I can fly them much further than I can see them before losing signal.

Some people prefer external antennas so they can get better range. To use an external antenna you need two things. You need a pigtail between the module and a hole in the Devo case, and an antenna that screws onto that pigtail.

I see from your pic that you already have a pigtail and external antenna, so you might as well stick with that. However, you mentioned using a dual band antenna, and that might be a weak link. Dual band antennas generally don’t perform as well as single band antennas. You said that your current pigtail is RP-SMA, so you could get a different antenna to match. It doesn’t matter if you use SMA or RP-SMA as long as the pigtail connection matches the antenna connection. So for maximum range you could replace your current antenna with a better one that matches your pigtail. I don’t use external antennas and I’m not sure which one to suggest, but perhaps someone else can give you a good option.

The other option is to just keep what you have if it’s giving you the range you need. If it’s working for you then there’s no reason to mess with it.
