Does DR use an RX channel, or is it all TX side?

I know, it sounds dumb

I picked up a Volantex auto-stabilizer for my FPV plane and want to configure the modes to a switch (on, high, low) which it supports.

I just map this to (let's say) channel 5 and go, right? As long as Channel 5 isn't mapped to the same switch as the DR? Or do I have to use channel 6 because DR is channel 5?

(I'm guessing it's the first one!)

Usually the gear switch is channel 5 and sent to the rx. With the original Firmware D/R was only a tx thing. With deviation I made my F7 an 8 channel transmitter . Now I can switch the 6 flight modes on a CC3D with D/R and FMOD.
