Devo 8 --->12 was created by Birdman
Out of curiosity.

The homepage says Devo8 supports 12 channels.
Is it possible to add the missing switches and knobs to Devo8 to make it more or less a Devo 12? (less the big screen)

12 has 2 extra switches, thr hold and trainer. 2 extra knobs, ch6 and 7. These are pots i assume.

Can these be wired up and used with Deviation?

TIA

Might as well just buy a 12?

Debatable.

I have an 8. 12's aren't exactly cheap.

No, not really cheap, but with a really good relationship between price and what you get for it.
The 4 sliders are above the sticks on the sides, one (per side) reachable from top and bottom, the other only from bottom. All are pots, also the knobs.
If you want to add hardware, you would have to look if the necessary mcu ports are free. As far as I remember there are not enough free analog inputs which are unused. Adding the switches would be easier since you only need a free standard port and there are some.
The real challenge is soldering. I have added a vibrating motor to my 8s (you will find it in the forum, with some pictures, I believe) and soldered some wires directly to the mcu pins (a little stamp with 25 small pins on each of its four sides with a distance to each other which is ridiculous for standard tools...

Soldering is the easy bit for me. I have soldered much smaller than that, it could be done easy enough with a sharp iron and good magnification. Most of all a steady hand.

If i wanted a dedicated TH sw like d12 i don't see anywhere in menu to select it on d8?

I suspect there might be some programming involved.

That puts it in the "to hard basket" for me.

You won't see it in the D12 either, because we don't have a dedicated TH function (except in the standard GUI)...

Yes, not too hard because everything you need exists for Devo12 - the trick is to enable the right things. This can mostly be done with editing some header files and you will not have to dive too deep into the code. The only thing is adding the used port and assigning it to the new function. But I could tell you where to search.
I have done this before when I added a vibration motor to my Devo8. I had some luck and could use the same port as in Devo10 which has vibration from stock. So I only had to activate the vibration. I have deleted my old repo otherwise I could give you an impression.

Needless to say that such addons will not be included in the main deviation code... (even my wonderful vibration is not :( ).

See this topic for a discussion to add HW related features to the Devo8.
There are already patch files to add a Vibration Motor and two Analogue channels (pots.)

The available, unused I/O in the Devo8 has also been identified, see:
